Tron Legacy Soundtrack

Been a while ladies and gents, but I've had a bee in my bonnet about a particular subject, ever since I saw the trailer for it over 6 months ago.

In that time it's been at the cinema, been released onto DVD and even had a remix album made.
Daft Punk were chosen by Disney to produce a soundtrack for a film that lets be honest doesn't have the greatest of story lines. The original I'll admit I've never seen, but I get the feeling Tron Legacy although a continuation of the story with the same characters is a whole new experience and certainly one worth watching.
Disney didn't just let Daft Punk go crazy on this however, they monitored them and gave a very precise direction, along with added help from soundtrack big man Hans Zimmer.
The soundtrack was a must buy, and was one of those purchases that had to be in physical form. Getting a CD is a real treat for me these days.
I can listen to it over and over and it hasn't got boring yet. During the film the soundtrack features fully, which I really admire. Some scores are merely cut here and there into the actual film, but if you watch Tron Legacy you can re live each track and enjoy them as the film unfolds in front of you.
The movie was also a 'proper' experience at the cinema, not just because of the 3D sections, but because with anticipation and the help of the subtle soundtrack, it smoothly leads you scene by scene. The end comes even before you've got to grips with how much of an experience it actually is.

Below are two tracks, the first from Daft Punks 'Alive' album. It feels like the original Tron film, it sounds like a basic and preliminary sound that isn't quite polished enough to pass onto a film score, but nevertheless still reminds me of the final product they produced for the movie.
The second is a snippet of a lovely track from MJ Cole. It doesn't have the same epic feel that Daft Punk communicated with the film score but you feel that they could've blended it well into Tron Legacy if they had wanted to.

Although the Reconfigured album has some excellent remixes on it (Moby, Glitch Mob, Boys Noize and Avicii are all stand out performers) it kind of takes away the raw genius of the soundtrack as a masterpiece, because Tron Legacy sounds just as good from the telly at home as it does in your headphones whilst on the move.

Alright girls and boys. It's a year later and my adventure into Gmail is now looking very old with a chosen address of 'bibstar2010'. What a plumpous fool.

Lets start with a gem of a choon. I played the original at the best NYE event in the whole of Bath @ Banglo. With a 9pm - 9am license, playing alongside Tom Maddicott and Graham S at Metripolis was only ever going to end in a severe hangover and a buggered body clock.
I can't remember how the original Boys Noize track 'Yeah' went down, but am hoping an opportunity arises for me to play this version... very soon...

Yeah so it's cold. Ice cold. Dangerous cold. So much so that walking in the road is safer than on a pavement in Bath.

N*E*R*D came out with Hypnotise you a couple of months back (I heard it first on Annie Mac, which is another reason why I've stopped listening to her show - far too much rubbish and not enough decent music drug substance these days).
Lets just say I wasn't that impressed. Dubstep don Nero had a go at pimping it up, but his mix was more of a casual attempt rather than a right going over. Alex Metric however has given it a good going over -

It's just about half time for me during freshers week. 5 nights down and 4 more to go.

Gotta Dance Dirty provide the musical pleasure here. It's absolutely quality although definitely not 320k. When this gets released I'm buying it, no doubt. Highly energetic it doesn't take long to get going does it?! Even the drops are strong, giving that overall feel of a banger. Wonderful.

This video from the guys over at Squeegie is rather tasty too.

Soundcloud is wonderfully good fun and nicely social as well. Jimi Needles has been tickling me with some cool cuts recently, heres an older remix of his. It's proper infectious.

Eerie is a great word

Jakwob has always been so good at the atmospheric Dubstep that I love, oh so very much.
This track is sublime in the way it controls your tapping fingers, stomping foot and/or swaying head, which by the way kick off straight away.
It kinda wobbles professionally from eerie voices and instruments to electronic beeps in a way that not many other dubstep producers do.
At Glastonbury Jakwob really hit the hard and deeper dubstep as obviously the crowds were there for that and not any remixes they had already heard a hundred times. But its this kinda track that gets me and Jakwob does it so well. Can I call it funky soulful classical dubstep please?!

From start to finish, this next track will always have 100% of my attention.
McMess over at The Smoothest Gooch kindly shared some new remixes of an already super mixed track and arguably Skream's first remix of 'In for the Kill' by La Roux, allowed the masses to indulge in a bit of dubstepping. Many moons later and some more mixes are out. Danger's Ocean Remix (click to download) is slow but by no means does it lack punch. Like a lesson in French electronic house and sublime vocals, it also reminds me greatly of something older, which I can't put my finger on. Pure gold.

DJ Fresh, in my mind is commercial Drum and Bass, as I know who he is and what he does!
So to kick off this quickie post, here is a new track from him that really sucks you in with its quick and bouncy beginning, pulls you through the bush, spits in your face, and then sings nicely to you.
Standard stuff but its good, can just hear it blowing a speaker or two in XL...

The beginning and end of the song will be familiar and even a bit boring to you, but it's the middle that I like. Kind of the opposite of reading a book, or what is true about a jam and peanut butter sandwich.

Been listening to Chris Lake's Essential Mix and it has been pretty standard so far. Nothing crazily good I mean, just a 'does what it says on the tin' kinda feel, but hey, its only Chris Lake so what do I expect?!

Anyway you flippin puppies, I mentioned in the previous post that i'd contacted Manila Killa after also posting one of there choons on here, and those fine fellows got back to me sharpish.

So the q&a goes something like this...

I actually just moved back to the motherland, Manila, Philippines recently, to finish up my last year in high school! It's been a great experience so far, as I get to enjoy the horrors of their academic IB program! Back on point - I think the main difference between the two dance music scenes in the US and the UK is the conservative level of the music. The United States are fairly new to the scene, and are therefore experimenting with their sound. But soon the United States will have its place in dance music. Unfortunately, I could be wrong (I am only 17) and I haven't experienced as much as I wanted to. The only show I've been to was to watch Deadmau5 perform for Washington D.C. back in November. It took place near a rundown neighborhood, but soon it will be that America will appreciate dance music as much as the UK does, to the point where everyone can conveniently enjoy it.

Who is the real Manila Killa?

The REAL Manila Killa is me, who is responding to this message (Chris Gavino). In the past year I worked with my close cousin in the States. He helped a lot with the ideas, and I mainly worked on the productions of the songs. And since I am also back in Manila, I am able to work with my close Indian friend, who has no musical experience, but whom I'm sure can share a lot of curry for our late night studio sessions! Music is just a hobby for now, but I hope it can develop into something more.

Which of your featured Soundcloud creations/mixes/mash ups took the longest/really got on your ball sacking nerves and why?

The featured Soundcloud song that I think took the longest was my recent remix of The Glitch Mob's "Drive It Like You Stole It" featuring a rapper and friend who I've known since the 6th grade. Marionik is his name, and he will be doing big things in the future (He's only entering his 2nd year in high school!). The reason why it took the longest is because it was catered for another person to do vocals over, and this was the first time I had ever collaborated, so I wanted it to be perfect.

It's been a genuinely long time since I've posted some music to the world, slash 2 ppl (Hi Dad).

So on this very rainy afternoon before dinner I will rectify this situation with three songs.

The first is by a duo known as Manilla Killa. This track is one their first creations and it's epic but on a subtle scale. It doesn't blow your mind, but it takes you on a journey and this makes it listenable x200. Hopefully I'll have a quick Q&A and some more musical goodness from them soon, but for now listen to this, a lot.

The second track this evening is about a year late for the masses of zombies wandering through chart land.
I would however, go so far as to say that this remix by Stanton Warriors is better than the original. Big beats and breakdowns match the Dnb original by Sub Focus, but add longevity to it I feel. See what you think.

Last and by no means least is newer track given a going over by U-Tern.
The original I will not shy from shy away from saying is irritable like that hair in your beer you can't bloody get at cause you've had 7 already. You end up drinking it or pouring beer down you trying to avoid it.
My good friend McMess of SmoothestGooch fame, suggests that Russ Chimes' attempted remix is better, but U-Tern just hits the Nu Disco smooth but bouncing vibe for me.

Sunday @ Glasto

...and so by Sunday we were sweating our balls off but looking forward to beating the Germans.

We sadly only caught 5 acts throughout the whole of Sunday...

The first was Paloma Faith who was weirdly wonderful

The second act was directly after Paloma, on (as you can see) the Pyramid stage.

We only stayed to watch Norah Jones because both me and James bought a ridiculously large Pizza and Curry respectively.

Then the football happened, we drank lots and trundled off to hear the end of what sounded like a fabulous Faithless performance.

Stevie Wonder. It was fabulous. We sung, we danced and although I wouldn't say he was amongst my top three performances of the week, that is only because of the high expectation that he duly satisfied.

Glasto is a real festival where there is a sense of community. Unless you get your tent ravaged by burglars then everyone is your friend.

So onto Saturday, and with the whole place anticipating a footballing victory on Sunday we went to see the Lightning Seeds first thing. Now the lead singer is a little old and his voice was never really super amazing but here (click for link to video) is a video of a wonderfully acoustic version of 'Three Lions'.

A quick visit to the Dance Village to see Parker who wasn't really on his game, but then one of the highlights and Lissie. I was sent a promo of her new album just before we left for Glastonbury and was clever enough to listen to it and then make plans to see her. For she has a magical voice on CD but its even better live. Plus she is gorgeous, so if you're bored of Ellie Goulding being beautiful then listen to some Lissie.

Jakwob (Video link) was very good, but also on the tiniest little stage so was mega busy.

So I trundled up to the acoustic stage to see ole Eavis chat to Radio 2 favourite Johnny Walker about the festival so watch 'A very poor quality video clip of the interview'.

The early evening passed me by as I wasn't too fussed about the line up, but set off out again to see a very poor Kelis performance which we all ignored and then set off in different directions. I stuck with the danceness and had a very good system of dancing, then pissing, then drinking... and so on and so forth most notably to A Skillz (Video link), then to Kissy Sell Out and also a bit of High Contrast (Video Link)

The man who lends you soap in Glastonbury is god. Much like the man Eavis who created the festival.

It's been over for a week already, but here is my quick musically led story, mashed full of pictures, video's and choons of my second trip to Worthy Farm.

We got there on Wednesday, England were shit. Won't be talking about them again.

Thursday night saw an Annie Nightingale Pussy Parlure, kick off proceedings but she had an awesome line up, so huge queues meant we went straight to see Beardyman who may be in Bath soon... keep your ears open for that! (Video - Beardyman @ Glasto). He was good but we also recently saw him in a more intimate venue in Bristol where I would say he was better. So enjoy the choon below, which was done with a more than capable beat maker who goes by the name of A-Skillz.

Rolf Harris @ Glasto 2010

Above is a wonderfully nostalgic video of Rolf Harris performing on the Pyramid stage first thing on friday, which was both packed and bathed in sun.

Quickly zipping across to the John Peel stage, we all watched Miike Snow. Who weren't amazing live but were extremely delightful, breathing fresh life into an album that I love. The video Miike Snow @ Glasto 2010 is just a quick snippet of the original, which was remixed by Caspa and available for a quick listen/download here on Soundcloud.

Friday afternoon/evening was all about the West dance tent though... where Boy 8-bit did a very good job of kicking off a fab line up.

After a quick poo and a fill up on liquid, I trundled back to the dance area where I caught some Example. Boi was he crap. His MC-ing and chart music bored me very quickly.

So I was pleasantly surprised by Chromeo who were in one of the other 5 tents in the dance village. Much better synth vocals and electro beats from the duo. Shame they were on at 5.15 in the afternoon!

Rusko next, and although the tent was busy at 6pm and everyone was loving the heavy choonage, I didn't fancy dancing near a few hundred gurning teens who loved the sound of a 140bpm beat a bit too methodically for my liking.

So I headed over to see Nneka, and boy were they good/hot.

Their rendition of the well known Chase and Status remixed 'Heartbeats' (Soundcloud Link Here) was awesome... go get some of their choons and enjoy the magical vocals and chilled reggae beats.

Fake Blood next up. He had earlier joined Boy 8-bit for his set and was taking the piss out of the red haired dj for being too serious when mixing, which reminded me a LOT of my rather serious face when I DJ.... but in Boy 8-bit at least I know someone else who also looks as stern as I do! Fake Blood just rocked it really, not much else to say.

Finally and by no means least on Friday night I had to go and see ole Norman. He is awesome live and he didn't disappoint me. Red flare, Chase and Status just before, and his own awesome intro are all in the videos below.... enjoy.

So, we have a hung parliament and now a coalition. Not too fussed about the Tories being in power, as it'll all change at the next election. I'm just glad Gordo is gone. His smile worried me immensely. Down to the music and first off Eminem. Yes I said Eminem. His latest track has activated that thing on my iTunes, Apple call the repeat button. I hardly use it, but for this choon it remains on. The lyrics, his return to the scene and its 86bpm make me love it. His next album 'Recovery' which along with the message from 'Not Afraid' speak of his recent troubles and his road to this comeback. Not due for release till June the 22nd, so feast your ears on this and let me know if you agree on its merits.... Eminem - Not Afraid (Mediafire) One other track for you today, which is a remix from Reset! It's good shit and very nostalgic for me, and its close to making the set list for the upcoming Summer Ball gig. Cassius 1999 was an absolutely fab track and would have earned a repeat 'status' had I owned iTunes when it was released. Soundcloud, Mixed in Key and That Horse Race.

I've been DJing for about 4 years now and have owned the 'DJ tool' Mixed in Key for 2 of those years. So why the fuck haven't I used it properly till now?! It works amazingly well and although I would prefer to be able to hear keys in my head myself, if it improves sounds then I shall continue with it.

Soundcloud is something I came to just after this christmas, and boy is it a little gold mine. Some of my favourite artists don't have a Soundcloud but those that do have links to Beatport, iTunes or to free downloadable tracks. It's a great way to preview songs as well and the interface is simple and easy to use. Sign up, 'follow' your favourite musicians and it just spreads. Some of the more unknown producers also post a lot of stuff to Soundcloud and although there is a lot of shit, like I said... dig for that gold and you'll find it.

Last year I managed to pick out the 100-1 winner of our fabled and Grand, National horse race. Admittedly i've been betting on the race since I was able to read, so my strike rate isn't all that good, but here are some musical long shots that will also be very big winners for you.

Ok, so Ellie is here. I know McMess from The Smoothest Gooch liked the Russ Chimes remix, so here is a little twist to it and an example of Soundclouds' greatness.

A lot of love to Chemical Jump who with this post (Click here to go to the amazing songs) provided my set in the backward town of Chippenham with a lot of bass heavy choons. Of particular note from the post linked above are 'Dirty Talk' and 'Four Floors'. BIG stuff from Diplo and Laidback Luke.

One last treat is from Nero. Dan Stephens and Joe Ray continue to bring the sound of Dubstep, D&B and whatever else, to the cream of the UK's crop. Which is Illustrated by the fact they are doing three under 18 gigs in the Southwest including one in Bath in the coming weeks. Under 18's fucked on cheap cider, pills and Vodkat, wandering the streets after there bedtime... sounds like a perfect scenario for my housemate Will.

Just dropped is a wonderful Deadmau5 remix of Pendulum's new one, Watercolour.

Now Pendulum aren't Drum and Bass and admittedly I don't really like much of there stuff as mentioned before, but this new one has jumped up and grabbed me ass in a very pleasant way.

I think it's the vocal that really gets me, but the drops and lean towards DnB also please the ears.

Nu Disco. Apparently is music with influences from the 70's or 80's and it works, whether its synth heavy or disco-esk it doesn't really matter. Obviously it's been around for a while but some releases recently have caught my ear. Zane Lowe recently spouted about how happy he was that people were catching onto the slower bpm variety (110-120) of Nu Disco, so heres a selection of what's in my bag at the minute with Zane in mind...

Are you English? Was over thinking again the other day while watching the Rugby, and wondered why if the government are so keen on making us all 'European' do the four home nations still sing their individual national anthems? Shouldn't we have a British anthem? Or even a European one....? O dear, this opens all kinds of questions up to me, perhaps though if you could answer the first one, I will sleep easier.

Here are some songs that will make that sunshine we are having (In England anyway), even more pleasurable and are also being hammered on the dancefloors i'm gracing at the minute.

Rude Boy by Rihanna has that annoyingly catchy feel to it, but not the original. No no, far too drab and slow. Luny P who hails from Australia has created a wonderful 'Booty Breaks' remix however. Jason Derulo. I won't say anymore. Afrojack though I will tell you about. His remix of Watcha Say has had for me hugely different reactions but I love it, I'd play it 3 times a night if I had three different crowds in front of me. It messes around with the original but keeps the vocal we all know, while hammering us with a heavy and vibrant electro beat. The last third of the track however is for me the best when you get both at the same time.

He hails from Holland (feels wrong saying the Netherlands) and has recently done remixes of PokeHerFace and Show Me Love, but as well as the Watcha Say remix, here is a flavour of his own work.

While I've been busy with my usual love of electro, and discovering the many different dubstep remixes that people do of every feckin La Roux or Ellie Goulding track, I've pretty much forgotten about Drum and Bass...

Is it not a winter thing maybe? Seasonal? Or the fact that not much decent has popped up at all over the cold months.

Anyway I can't understand this loss of love, but these next tracks should help both you and I regain our 'summer' spring in our step that involves a bpm much higher than anything else.

The first is a fresh new track from Blame. I like Blame, he is one of those producers who's name goes standardly well on a remix package and his own tracks always find their way to my hard drive. Yeah it's not crazily different but it's easy on the drum and bass ears. There is also a Drumsound and Bassline remix which I also recommend but the D&B one from Blame himself wins as the top track today.

It's almost cheesy this one especially with the addition of the Stryder. It kinda works though.

Pendulum - Watercolor (You Tube)

I don't like Pendulum. I couldn't tell you exactly why, but there is something not very Drum and Bass about them. It's probably the fact that everyone requested Pendulum at Flirt for years when saying they wanted D&B and although I hear their live shows are awesome, I think their commercial success has kinda ruined what love I may have had for them.

The album from ML still gets pumped in my room and in Clubs on a regular basis and I always enjoy a bit of Foamo. I enjoy this track no less. Good solid dirty stuff to get you deep and down tonight. Also check the Mad Decent label if you like, they give out good shit.

Wolfgang's 5th Symphony - Original Mix

O Wolfgang Wolfgang, how I love stuff like this. It's geared for a big room, but sounds good anywhere. The cuts from and into the classical keep the longish track fresh and it packs a nice punch too. The breakdowns are of course sublime and some nice vocal intervention midway through as well.

So after monday, comes tuesday and a suitably mega post.

Mason is Dutch and apart from that 'Exceeder' track he did, I reckon both you and I don't know much about him. This is a new track from him and it features the short but sweet vocal of Sam Sparro and the very welcome inclusion of DMC (Which added to Run, makes a good combo), both people we know about.

They apparently met after a Hyde Park performance of 'Walk this Way', all loved each other saw dollar signs (£$$$,$$$) and came up with this:

Not ground breaking, but harmless enough and also different from the countless Guetta + random R'n'b star shit that David has been making.

This next one is also a pretty average track in my humble opinion and is really only up here because it was produced by Diplo. Enjoy it anyway though yeah?

Snoop Dogg feat. Kid Cudi - That Tree

Couple of dubstep tracks up next, JSaxton first.

'He's not even 18 yet' say the bloggers, well that surely just shows how easy Dubstep is to produce if you have a computer, some money for software and half a brain?!

Given, I cannot produce music as of yet, so throwing my stones from a glass house isn't a good idea but the wonky additions to this track (1.19 onwards) don't, I think, really add to it and I reckon he got a bit too adventurous putting them in. It's a fab remix otherwise though!

2. Secondly, Jakwob does his wonderfully wonky wobbled best to give a dubstep re-smack to Mr Foggs - Moving Parts. Soothing vocals make way for dubstep vibes here. Nice. Apparently Mr Fogg mastered the guitar and four-track recorder by 12, and by 14 was an expert drummer.

Been sitting on this next track for a while, but it's climb up my iTunes play count list has made me realise how much I like it and how good it is. Miike Snow get an Ibiza summer treatment - Silvia - (Sebastian Ingrosso and Dirty South remix)

Frozen Lolly Friday

Well it's been a while since I posted.

I'd attribute this to being busy, but I think it's more down to me being lazy, which is poor form.

Today I've seen the sun, hail stones and an ice cream van. Which leads nicely to but has no connection with, this remix of Frozen by Madonna. Can't remember how I came across this but I've always been encapsulated by the feeling I get when listening to the original so this remix does well to better that feeling:

When I saw this remix pop up in front of me, I thought all of my dreams had come true.

Breakage did Dubstep wonders for the Riverside track we all now know, and hate, but secretly love, like Marmite - and he has done it again here.

Massive Attack shouldn't be strangers to any of you and if they are, then fucking shame on you, you young child.

This first track is a new one and really rather lovely, yeah it's not one you can rave out to, but Massive Attack don't really exist for that purpose. Enjoy.

Calvin doesn't turn me on

Calvin Harris I do like. Don't get me wrong, he has produced some good shit, but for some unknown reason his latest track 'You used to hold me' isn't doing it for me.

Not sure if it's because I need to listen more, because it sounds similar to other stuff he has done or whether it's just pure manure... I don't know. I'll let you decide, but knowing the charts it'll be huge and have a million remixes.

Speaking of remixes I've found Nero and Laidback Luke's take on the track but they are pretty shish kabob on quality so i'll wait for someone else to find better quality or post those bad boys on here myself soon enough (Nero and Laidback Luke excite me though - so look out for that post).

So in tribute to those clubbers, here are a couple of fresh tracks for your listening pleasure.

Apparently Nas and Damian Marley are 'Distant Relatives', so this is also the name of their upcoming album.

'As We Enter' is not only a short track, but it's sweet and tasty.

Now this track is hitting my spot so hard at the moment that I can't tell you how pleased my ears are, that it exists. Deadmau5, one of my big favs in the dance department, has had Faxing Berlin remixed in a bass heavy Dubstep way. Now don't be fooled by the Dubstep tag here, it retains the subtle vocal and the progressive house feel but somehow feels even more peaceful with the accompaniment of the extra bass drops and beats.

Unfortunately the remixer is unknown... but i'll love it none the less.

Even though I am old, I don't remember the original Frankie Goes To Hollywood track - Power of Love, from the 80's, but apparently it is/was a big deal.

I'm also a sucker for lovely house music with a vocal and a melodic beat...... "tosser". I hear you shout, as that is what I would also say, but this remix which could be old like me (I do not know) is goooood. I recently found it while surfing and was pleasurably surprised and actually very much enjoy it. The Billie Jean tribute/steal is obvious and the vocal stays true to the original so it's mildly successful as a track. Well done Players Please.

So I was listening to Drake - Forever (Nero remix) (trust me you want to download this) and at last I thought, someone has realised that the wonky beats and bass that we always associate with Dubstep can go so screamingly well with some rap shiz. There are so many highly requested average hip hop/rnb tracks around the 140 bpm dub mark that could have some wonky bass beats shoved up there arse for proper dancefloor action... maybe i'll try this myself (the remixing that is). The Dubstep I am so naively into, usually involves some vocals. A hot lady i.e. Ellie Goulding (+ Jakwob) would be a good example. The deep Dubstep really doesn't do it for me, I love deep house, dirty electro and the like, and can dance like a retard to it for ages, but Dubstep of this sort is just soo slow! I don't know much about Dubstep if i'm honest, but I do take time to find the bouncy stuff (usually remixes done by accomplished dub artists) that always sound good on the dancefloor. So I challenge those reading this (it may only be me!) to listen to this dub track and not nod your head, tap your foot or get up and fully wonk about - Turboweed enjoy

So another post today and another one of those new ladies on the block... its that wonderfully styled VV Brown. Which more importantly had a free Boys Noize CD attached to it, its fidgety electro house, with a big bass, so here is an example of the big bass and also a track to show you a slightly more mellow side to the noize of the boys - "Wonderline 1" (Big Bass) + "High Together" (Liquid fidget) Couple more tracks I got in thee ole Promo post today.... a cheesy Swedish choon by some human being called Lazee (Don't know if they deserve a tagging, if this person is gonna use a production name such as they have) who is making thier way onto our shores soon. This DEFinitely isn't the shiiite original, but a couple of rather rowdy DnB remixes, enjoy!
